Artist Statement
windows is a series in dialogue: it is both an examination of the misunderstanding, warping, and dilution of personhood through the two-dimensional interfaces we use to communicate as well as an inward look at the anxieties, fears, frustrations, and challenges of an artist and human being trying to navigate life through this broken, technological means. The iterations, therefore, consider the effects on those seen and those being seen, highlighting the breakdown of individual, psyche, and connection across the spectrum. In the windows, all is revealed and yet wholly distorted, creating a paradox of seeing all and seeing nothing at the same time. As the artist, I have deliberately hijacked this arena to wrestle through my own internal maladies, thus creating a dance between the effects of life through windows and the futility of parsing one’s human experience through this lacking means. windows is an emotionally-driven series focusing first on the internal experience and then moving outward into the conceptual realm.
These thirteen new iterations were produced from July through September of 2021. They represent the establishment of a firm compositional and emotional direction for the series. Simultaneously, they encapsulate a period of time marked by personal unknowns and uncertainty, fraught with insecurity, anxiety, and frustrations related both to my inescapable relationship with the internet as well as my life in general.
