Occurring simultaneously alongside the Main Acts and The Labyrinth on a parallel timeline, the entr’acte pieces constitute alternative scenarios that consider possibilities under different circumstances. While this manifests in several new narrative threads, the most preeminent among them is a contrary timeline—a good future—that runs contradictory to the overarching chain of events dictating the Main Acts. What if Cruel Summer had succeeded? What if a share in the creative process had never been leveraged? What if the artist’s schemes had fully blossomed? What if the model he could use for this work could be anybody else?
These artworks, therefore, reference, defy, scrutinize, and mock various aspects of their Main Act and The Labyrinth counterparts in order that the complete vision of Cruel Summer as a body of work hinged upon the interplay of choices may be fully realized. Yet they exist no less as independent creations. The entr’actes are a place in which the artist exercises preferential option in spite of the uncontrollable and impending situations that begat his unfolding journey and ultimate destination with this commissioned, compulsory body of work.
